Our Initiatives

All Are Welcome here

Our window cling acts as a public display of support to Princeton for all humans, including and specifically at-risk communities.

If you are interested in displaying the sign in your home or business, or if you are interested in distributing the signs in your own community, contact us for more information.

Be Like Lovejoy

‘Be Like Lovejoy’ is a slogan/campaign introduced by Human Human during the Homestead Festival in 2017 via postcards that we distributed in the parade. Owen Lovejoy’s prominence in the abolition movement and the Underground Railroad made him a national figure and a Princeton Illinois icon. The annual Homestead Festival honors Reverend Owen Lovejoy and his contributions to our nation’s history.

The goal is to remind Princeton that the ever-popular Homestead Festival exists to honor the legacy of Owen Lovejoy, and that there’s no question that if he were alive today, he would still be fighting for racial justice. Owen Lovejoy would not hesitate to say – Black lives matter.

Mural on North Main St.

We celebrate Lovejoy and call on our community to follow his antiracist legacy through a mural painted on the north end of town. We’ve also created a website belikelovejoy.com that contains perspectives from local community remembers reflecting on Lovejoy’s legacy and the opportunities to renew our community’s commitment to antiracism as well as resources/further reading on Lovejoy, Princeton’s history and antiracism. We hope these will be a source of inspiration and learning for years to come.

Chalk-a-palooza

In 2022, we organized our first annual sidewalk chalk event. This all ages event encourages community members to express themselves with art and messages that promote equality and inclusion. The first event had around 30 different artists, all expressing love and affirmation for their loved ones, their neighbors, and for all marginalized communities.

Crisis Resources

We produced a refrigerator magnet containing crisis/support resources within our community, displaying the names and phone numbers of local organizations within the Illinois Valley that offer services for – mental health support, crisis intervention, housing, substance abuse, abuse assistance and family support.

To date, we have distributed over 1000 of these magnets to local hospitals, counseling centers, schools and other organizations.

To receive information about these magnets should we reprint more, feel free to contact us.
